The data were collected by filling questionnaire during rush hours in the afternoon between 12:00 noon to 2:00 p. m. In all, 40 customers were accounted for during the survey time period in KFC and McDonald’s. The data were collected during the first week of January 2010. 1. 6 LITERATURE REVIEW First we will take into account the history of KFC. The company was founded as Kentucky Fried Chicken by Colonel Harland Sanders in 1952, though the idea of KFCs fried chicken actually goes back to 1930. The company adopted the abbreviated form of its name in 1991. Perfecting its secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices in 1939, KFC has come a long way. Their products were high price and targeted only upper class. Later they introduced packages which were affordable by many people. McDonalds Pakistan opened its doors in September 1998 at Lahore and presently operating in seven major cities with a network of 20 restaurants. With a strong belief in the Ray Krock phrase when you are green you are growing, McDonalds Pakistan has an aggressive plan to expand in all other cities of Pakistan and is rapidly growing with the focus to provide friendly and quick service restaurant experience to their customers. Today millions of Pakistanis place their trust in McDonalds everyday to provide them with food of a very high standard as well as good service. In the past five years, the response to McDonald’s coming to Pakistan has been overwhelming. McDonald’s located in Pakistan are currently employing about 1,000 Pakistanis and each store is managed by Pakistani managers. They have also contributed in other ways than food service. McDonalds has investment of over Rs 300 crore in the country and payment of taxes and duties amounting to more than Rs 100 crore. Since McDonald’s is doing so well in Pakistan they will continue to grow and add more stores in more cities in the future. But in Pakistan McDonald’s is facing a tough competition by KFC. KFC and McDonald’s serve to dominate the fast food business in Pakistan. Both fast food chains serve all their customers effectively, given the different categories and factors that determine the success of restaurants and fast food chains in Pakistan. However, based on the findings of the previous research, it can be perceived that KFC is running a more successful business in Pakistan, compared to the business run by McDonald’s. This was given proof in the article, based on the many and varied responses of customers to surveys, which involve their evaluation of both fast food restaurants, based on a number of factors, namely, food, service, environment, price, convenience, brand, and promotion. In terms of food, although both fast food restaurants almost have the same varieties, certain differences can still be recognized. Both KFC and McDonald’s offer chicken and hamburger meals including snacks, desserts, and drinks. However, only KFC offers a wide range of healthy side dishes, such as mashed potato, carrot muffin, and lotus fresh vegetable side dishes. In this sense, KFC aims to uphold healthy eating and nutrition of their customers. In addition, it has been emphasized in the case study that KFC appeared to have the upper hand over McDonald’s in terms of introducing new products in the market. Most of the new products of KFC, such as its lunch items, suit the tastes of the Pakistani. KFC has also been introducing new products in the market in a regular rate. In terms of environment and service, although both fast food restaurants appeal to their market due to their convenient lighting, cleanliness, music, and decorations, still, KFC serves to have the upper hand over McDonald’s. Based on the survey, more customers are â€Å"Very Satisfied† with the services and environment of KFC over McDonald’s. This is because the waiting time in McDonald’s is too long, compared to KFC. In addition, it can also be perceived that KFC has more advantage than McDonald’s, as the employees in KFC have less time to interact with customers than its counterpart, as the volume of its business is larger. The prices of food offered by both restaurants equally serve each other. However, the food offered by KFC is slightly higher, being able to offer some meals that are not offered by McDonald’s, such as the Family Bucket, Garden Chicken Burger Meal, and Hot Spicy Wing Meal. Nevertheless, the volume of customers in all given times of day, in both weekdays and weekends is still higher in KFC than in McDonald’s. Given such figures, it can be perceived that more customers prefer KFC to McDonald’s, thus, indicative of the fact that KFC runs a more successful business than its counterpart does. Moreover, the findings of the study indicate â€Å"More low income and high income customers prefer KFC to McDonald’s, while average income customers prefer McDonald’s more than KFC† In this sense, it can be observed that KFC has a wider range of customers compared to McDonald’s, thus, indicating that more customers patronizes KFC. After analysis it was found that 60% people’s pleasant memory is associated with KFC. 32% people have KFC. 8% do not have as much pleasant memories as others. The popularity of any restaurant is just not dependent upon the taste and price of food but it also depend upon the enjoyable environment which include play area for kids, happy meal and gifts. 52% people consider McDonald’s is more enjoyable but 48% people like the environment of KFC. The increasing trend of fast food leads both restaurant branches to multiply in order to make them easy to get to. 53% people think KFC is more accessible while 47% think that McDonald’s is more accessible. Q18) Which brand offer deals which have attractive prices? The higher percentage of people found the prices of KFC more attractive than McDonald’s. According to the data 55% people found prices of KFC affordable and attractive. While that of 45% found McDonald’s prices smart. Q19) If you owned your own fast food restaurant, then which fast food restaurant Attribute you want to follow-up? The majority results show that KFC has won the race in our fast food survey. It is found that KFC fulfill the needs of its customers to some extent, so considering KFC as their ideal people would like to follow the success tracks of KFC in order to have bright future of their restaurant ahead. 75% people like to follow the attributes of KFC for their own restaurant and only 25% consider McDonald’s as their ideal. Based on people answers, 85%agreed with the statement that the future of international fast-food chains in Pakistan is bright, 5% were not agreed on bright future and 10% people have no idea about this. With todays hectic lifestyles, time-saving products are increasingly in demand; one of the most obvious examples is fast food. People want quick and convenient meals as a result, consumers rely on fast food . Knowing this, fast food providers are coming up with new ways to market their products that save time for consumers. All that make sense though because that is what fast food is supposed to meancheap, fast, and tasty. 1. 10 CONCLUSION The conclusion we have drawn after conducting our research is that the problem statement which we consider in our research is confirmed . Our hypothesis that KFC is in spotlight and McDonald’s is a side show was right and people prefer KFC over McDonald’s because of their good quality food and their reasonable price, hence KFC capture a large market than McDonald’s in Pakistan. 1. 11 RECOMMENDATION AND SUGGESTION After conducting our research we come to a point that about 80% people prefer KFC over McDonald’s here are some suggestions and recommendations to both the brands. Based on our research we suggest that McDonald’s should improve the quality of their food because majority of people found McDonald’s a less healthy option. It was also found that Macdonald’s satisfies the need of people to lesser extent, so McDonald’s should try hard to make up to the expectations of people. It was found by our research that although people prefer KFC over McDonald’s but they found the packing of McDonald’s more attractive than that of KFC, so KFC should work on their packing and make it more attractive. When it comes to outlook of the restaurant, majority of people like the outlook of KFC, so McDonald’s should improve their outlook. It was also found that KFC is better advertised; hence McDonald’s should work to promote their brand in order to capture a large volume of customer. Having A Sense Of Being Different Essay

Normalcy is almost impossible to define however we can all identify those which society considers being abnormal. For those who fit into this category, belonging can be a difficult achievement. It is important to take into account what is to be normal however why some people have a sense of being different as well. Those who are considered different can find it difficult to belong however for some this is the desired outcome. Mundooroo’s text Wild Cat Falling explores the ideas of having a sense of identity and belonging and how difficult it can be when you are different. Being normal can be difficult to understand. In society there are rules, values and expectations which ‘normal’ people follow. They provide people with a sense of purpose and belonging as if they are a significant part of a group. It also provides people with stability, security and safety. Belonging to a community with shared rules and values can be a given such as a student at school. Students are generally required to wear uniform so they can be identified as a student. They are also required to respect teachers and call them by their names as well as raising your hand in class if you have a question. This is an expectation that schools have administered over the years and is considered general behaviour and ‘normal’ in a school environment. The protagonist in Wildcat Falling is an aboriginal boy who attends school and lives in a house, which the Noongar kids call the ‘†a-di-dah house†. His father was white therefore he was sent to school as an expectation of white people however kids similar to him from both aboriginal parents can’t afford to go to school and see Wildcat as ‘different’. This makes it difficult for him to find where he belongs and they call him â€Å"a cocky in a cage†. Normal is the values and expectations people follow to feel secure and safe and is if they belong. It may be all well and good to be normal, but some people have a sense of being different which can make it difficult to belong. It can be hard for some people because they just don’t fit into ‘normal’ societal expectations for example 1950s gay men and women. It was deemed very abnormal to be attracted to the opposite sex as it also goes against religious beliefs.  People with a physical disability and mental health issues can also find it very difficult to belong as people in society aren’t always educated about them therefore don’t understand or accept their situation as they are not familiar with it. This can be very degrading towards people with disability and make their lives difficult to lead. Like these people, Wildcat finds it difficult to feel as though he belongs. In order to gain that feeling, he alters his arrest so that he could be put into solitary confinement. â€Å"After solitary the prison accepted me as if I had never been accep ted outside. I belonged†. In this aspect he was recognised as ‘tough’ by the other prisoners and wasn’t rejected. Being different can make it hard not to be rejected by society. In many cases people choose not to belong however as they reject societal norms such as Emos for example. Yes, they look and act different to ‘ordinary’ people. They have the desire to attract attention by the way they dress and present themselves. Emos are stereotyped as depressed people who cut themselves, have dark hair that covers most of their face as well as wearing black clothes. That however is an extremely stereotypical view of emos. They are appropriately considered to poses very strong emotions, hence the word emo. They choose to outwardly express themselves unlike majority of society that choose to often keep their emotions neutral due to fear of judgment and the desire to belong and feel valued by others. Wildcat sees the world as a â€Å"fake heaven† and jail as a refuge. He doesn’t want to belong in society because he finds it â€Å"unrealistic† and believes released people will â€Å"fail and fail†. Therefore having that abnorm al sense can make it difficult to belong however that can ultimately be the desired outcome for many. Normal and different have many aspects that define them both. To be normal can be influenced by values and expectations, which if they aren’t generally followed can lead people to be viewed as different. Despite all of this, many people find it hard to belong by being different and others simply don’t seek to be the same in any way. Many people in society do want to stand out and be different. David Thomas makes many errors in his essay â€Å"The Mind of a Man.† In his thesis he tries to prove that women are not smarter than men as previously believed, but instead that they just excel at different tasks. However, throughout his whole essay, he describes that boys are discouraged by female teachers and does not stick to his thesis. He showed a biased point of view that he supported with only anecdotal evidence and studies that contained no numbers or statistics. Also, his use of emotion in his essay showed his anger towards others views that contradicted his. David Thomas takes a biased point of view in his essay. Throughout many parts of the essay he describes the stereotypes about boys, stating their difficulty to learn properly as a result of these stereotypes by often using anecdotal evidence. He describes the lower grades boys were getting than girls on the GCSE exams and makes the assumption, â€Å"The introduction of course work into the GCSE syllabus appears to favor girls, who tend to be diligent and less rebellious,† which has not been proven, or could not be backed up by any sort of statistical or factual information from studies. He makes this statement assuming that the reason must be that girls receive higher grades because the test favored them. He does not take into the consideration that maybe the boys just didn’t do as well for a number of other reasons that has nothing to do with the way the tests were designed. In the essay, he continues to show his biased point of view by quoting Tony Mooney, a secondary school headmaster, who reinforces his point saying boys are less advanced than girls because women teachers favor girls and do not reinforce boys because of their â€Å"aggressive† and â€Å"boisterous† behavior. Thomas adds this quote that has no factual evidence, it is the opinion of a school headmaster, who surely cannot be present everyday in every single class to know everything that’s going on. Thomas quotes Mooney’s son, who showed a difference in his marks when taught by a woman, â€Å"Because the men teachers never shout at me as much as the woman teachers† is another form of anecdotal evidence. This is the feeling of one little boy who cannot be compared to society as a whole (222). Thomas continues to try and prove his point by adding studies without any statistics in them and in turn makes many contradictions to things previously mentioned in his essay. He includes a study done at the University of California in which 72 boys and 60 girls at kindergarten level learned how to read with a machine. When tested, the girls scores were less than the boys scores. Then, when they went back to normal instruction by women teachers, they were tested again later and the boys scored less than the girls. As interesting as these results may be, they do not contain numbers to show how large the difference actually was. The difference could be minimal which could be due to a number of reasons. So, the fact that no statistical evidence was included with the study did not prove to be that convincing (223). Also, in the beginning of the essay, he states that women have been proven to be better at verbal tasks, which would explain the reason why they didn’t do as well with the machines as the teachers. So he contradicts himself entering this study by previously showing why a girl might have done better on these tests (221). Thomas uses a lot of emotion in his essay to prove his point, specifically when he talks about the quote he used from Christine Cosker who seemed to disprove one of his earlier quotes by Mooney. She said, â€Å"If girls achieve higher standards than boys, it is not the result of sympathetic female teachers: it is that boys fail to be motivated because of their attitude to women. Boy’s early experience is almost entirely one of a society which regards women’s traditional roles as trivial, dull and second-rate and dismisses their opinions. If girls have a positive role model in the female teacher, they will do better than boys. But if boys, unencumbered by society’s prejudices, valued their female teachers, then their progress would match that of girls†(223). Obviously Cosker felt strongly about her point and proved an alternative explanation to Mooneys as well as Thomas’ theory of female teachers being the cause of the boys lower grades. Thomas uses sarcasm as well to make his anger known. In reaction to her letter, he states â€Å"Heaven forbid that they [boys] should be given any consideration or compassion. Heaven forbid that the prejudices of the new age should be challenged. If you ever doubted that feminists have taken over from  apoplectic old colonels as the great reactionaries of society, just read this letter†(224). If you read between the lines of his sarcasm, you begin to see just what he is implying. He is implying that she didn’t give boys any compassion or consideration when she was simply stating that if the boys learned to appreciate their teachers more and see them as more of a role model it would work towards their advantage. He continues to attack her different point of view by stating them as a â€Å"feminists† point of view. In his efforts to try to make people take his side and believe his thoughts he just discredits himself because instead of embracing the possibility of other causes he simply knocks them down and states t hat they are just plain and simply wrong. Thomas’ body paragraphs and conclusion were not connected substantially to the main point of his essay. In his thesis, he used a quote from Dr. John Nicholson saying that the IQ scores from men and women were â€Å"indistinguishable† (221), and the only difference is that they were just better at different sort of tasks. Meanwhile, his whole entire essay attacked the fact that female teachers don’t support the boys and that caused their lower grades. So the information he provided did not support his thesis. Also he ends the conclusion with a strange statement that seem to signify a new thesis. His concluding sentence, â€Å"When Yoda sat on his rock in The Empire Strikes Back and told Luke Skywalker that he had to choose between the dark force and the light, he knew what he was talking about† (225), seemed to make little sense and had nothing to do with his essay. In writing his essay, he should’ve considered his audience and that some people who did not see the movie would not understand what he was implying, besides that statement seemed more like an opening line rather than a concluding one. In order for authors to make you see their point of view as valid, they sometimes compromise the strength of their information.
